While touring, Argos paints narrative paintings that resemble postcards. He’s been kind enough to paint a memory postcard piece for Garde Rail about a gig in Erlangen, Germany.

Art Brut records will play all day long without interruption and I will be auctioning off this highly coveted postcard memory painting by Eddie Argos in a silent auction starting at 11am and ending at 6p.m. The reserve for this piece will be $40.

Garde...

Terry Turrell to be represented by Garde Rail Gallery

Garde Rail Gallery has long admired the work of Seattle artist Terry Turrell, and we are pleased to debut Turrell’s paintings and sculpture at Aqua Art in Miami, December 2-5th 2010.

A self-taught figurative painter and sculptor, Terry Turrell is a natural fit for Garde Rail Gallery. Turrell’s preference for found materials and the juxtaposition of rugged with playful create his unique narrative. His signature layering of paint and building of texture allows for an emotional interchange with the art and define Turrell’s raw sensibility as an artist.

We will be debuting Terry Turrell’s work at Aqua Art Miami, located at the Aqua Hotel, room 202, 1530 Collins Ave. Miami Beach, FL, December 2-5, 2010.
Garde Rail Gallery is proud to be the first gallery to represent the photography of Austin, TX artist Pooneh Ghana. After seeing a photo of the band Art Brut (ironically enough) taken by Ghana, GRG perused more photos to discover a mountain of incredibly candid Polaroids of musicians at close range. These photographs are untouched and unfiltered, a real and fresh perspective in the digital age. Ghana’s work is not only behind the scenes; her precise and colorful live shots demonstrate great range for the emerging artist.

Jarvis Cocker, July 6 2009 4x4 polaroid photograph

Pooneh’s love for music has been the driving force in her photography taking her around Europe and America for the love of it. Having the gumption and the height (she’s 5’11”) she’s never hesitated going where she needed to in order to get the shot; her talent was quickly recognized and rewarded when press passes started gaining her more and downright legitimate access. Ghana’s work has already been featured in online zines and blogs such as Swide, Stereogum and Rollingstone.com.

We will be debuting Pooneh Ghana’s work at Aqua Art Miami, located at the Aqua Hotel, room 202, 1530 Collins Ave. Miami Beach, FL, December 2-5, 2010. For more information about Aqua Art Miami, visit www.aquaartmiami.com.

In his meticulous and detailed paintings, he reveals the seedy side of Nashville and also explores his boyhood “toy” fixation. Mr. Hooper's art is an amalgamation of pop icons, cartoon characters, dirty streets and urban decay. The pieces are usually detailed narratives interlaced with Hooper's singular wit and unique style.

While Mr. Hooper's art is sometimes categorized as folk or outsider art, we prefer to call it Pop Folk, as Mr Hooper is one of a handful of young Southern (mostly) self-taught artists working in this exciting new sub-genre.

"I grew up in Nashville, TN in the '70s and '80s - a typical middle-class kid who watched way too much TV. My first artistic endeavors were drawing on the walls of my closet with a purple crayon, copying characters from the funny pages and rendering all four members of Kiss. In high school, some kid brought a R. Crumb comic book to school. Crumb's art had a huge impact on me and inspired me to become a cartoonist. I spent my twenties creating comics and trying to get them published (with little success). After college, a myriad of low paying, dead-end jobs, and limited prospects in the cartooning business, I picked up a paint brush and began to paint in 1998. My paintings are an extension of what I was doing as a cartoonist, though not quite the same linear narrative as comic strips. Again, through self-training, trial and error, my paintings have evolved into distinctive artwork."

"For years while I was doing comix and graffiti, I operated under several pseudonyms. I never intended to be a painter who operated under a pseudonym. However, I had a teacher in college who addressed everyone by their last name. The parallel between me being Mr. Hooper and the character on Sesame Street (also named Mr. Hooper) was irresistible to my classmates. The nickname stuck with me and I began to sign prints and eventually paintings with Mr. Hooper. My given name is Tim Hooper but you can call me Mr. Hooper - everyone else does."
